The Office of Intramural Training and Education

Introduction

Pat Sokolove, Debbie Cohen, and Crystal Lewis come to work every day in the Office of Intramural Training and Education with the express purpose of helping postdoctoral fellows (and postbaccs and summer interns) make the most of their time at the NIH. We provide support for FELCOM activities such as its Career Development Workshops and FARE, but we are also available to advise individual trainees in areas including

• Thinking about careers inside and outside the laboratory
• Identifying opportunities to acquire professional skills such as teaching experience or improved public speaking
• Deferring student loans
• Getting more involved in postdoctoral activities at the NIH, including making suggestions for FELCOM programs
• Solving administrative problems
• Resolving conflicts in the lab

Pat spent more than twenty years on the faculty of the University of Maryland Medical School, serving as Associate Dean of the Graduate School for seven of those years. Debbie, who has a background in human resources and is certified in career development facilitation, has been at the NIH for more than fifteen years and is an excellent source of information on investigator interests and the intricate details of NIH operation. Crystal, who joined OITE in January of 2006, is expert in the rules governing many OITE programs, including loan deferments, as well as the main contact for fellows who have administrative inquiries.
