INSTRUCTIONS ON ACQUISITION OF FEDERAL DEA NUMBER
Clinical Fellows with clinical privileges might be interested in how to obtain a federal DEA number, one that is free of charge and does not require you to be licensed in Maryland (you can be licensed in any state). This is restricted to federal and state institutions. When the Clinical Fellow leaves the NIH he or she will need to update their DEA certificate to an unrestricted one with the number remaining unchanged.
The application form is available on line (http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/). You will need to choose the federal DEA option with waived fee. It will ask you a person to verify that you work in a federal or state institution. You may provide your office manager’s contact information (as long as you give her/him some notice that she/he might get a call from DEA about this). In the end you will get a page that you can print a confirmation page with your internet submission confirmation number. Please keep this number for your records. The application materials will probably be automatically forwarded to the Maryland DEA office (Baltimore). A week later you will then need to contact Shirley (last name not disclosed) at the DEA by phone @ (202) 305-8800 to follow-up on the status of your application. Your Federal DEA Number will be mailed to you at the address that you specify in the application. The entire process should take just a few weeks.

Clinical research translates laboratory discoveries into new and better treatments and therapies that improve the nation’s health. In order to facilitate NIH healthcare workers in providing the best possible care for patient volunteers while advancing the quest for new medical knowledge, the NIH CRIS enables clinicians, researchers and managers to efficiently and responsively manage both patient care and research information. If you are a credentialed Clinical Fellow you can enter the CRIS database through the web by clicking on https://crisaccess.cc.nih.gov/Citrix/MetaFrame/default/default.aspx.
Below is Information regarding the current CRIS registration and training process. PLEASE review this and keep a copy in a safe place so you know where to turn if you ever forget your CRIS password or need to direct one of your visiting residents/fellows to CRIS training:
