Background on Clinical Felcom

The Clinical Fellows Committee was started in 2004 by Dr. Gallin, the Director of the Clinical Center, in response to a recommendation from the Clinical Center Board of Governors. It was established to provide a communication venue between clinical fellows and the Director of NIH Clinical Center. Clinical fellows from each institute representing their respective institutes for the NIH Fellows Committee are members of Clinical FelCom. Any other interested clinical fellows are welcome to attend quarterly meetings following RSVP notification to the Clinical FelCom Co-Chairs. Clinical FelCom members meet quarterly with Dr. Gallin, and Dr. Ognibene who is the Director of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education. Agendas for the quarterly meetings are composed by Clinical FelCom members to address clinical fellows' topics of interest. Important information is communicated to clinical fellows from Clinical FelCom via list serve e-mail and ongoing development of this website. In 2005 the committee proposed that an Assistant Clinical Investigator position be created in order to assist Clinical Fellows in transitioning from the postdoctoral level to a tenure track level position. In 2006, institution of this appointment-based position was approved by Dr. Gottesman, the NIH Deputy Director for Intramural Research, and NIH Scientific Directors. The present and ongoing initiatives of Clinical FelCom include facilitation of more global NIH-wide clinical fellow access to IC-based grant writing programs, childcare, and guaranteed relocation cost benefits.
